Orca swimming in the waters of La Ventana, Baja California Sur
⚡ Quick answer

Yes, there are orcas in the Sea of Cortez, but sightings are occasional and unpredictable. Recent studies document that in the Gulf of California they hunt whales (fin, Bryde's and gray) [1] and juvenile white sharks, and that one pod may be specialized in hunting sharks and rays [2].

Few words get a boat as excited as "orcas!". In the Gulf of California they're real, and science is discovering that their life here is more surprising than we imagined.

A gulf with a third of the world's cetaceans

The islands and protected areas of the Gulf of California, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are home to 39% of the world's marine mammal species and a third of the world's cetacean species (whales, dolphins and porpoises) [3]. Orcas are part of that diversity.

Whale hunters

A 2025 study documented seven cases of orcas preying on baleen whales on the mainland coast of the Gulf, in Sonora, over 17 years: five fin whales, one Bryde's whale and one gray whale [1].

Shark (and ray) hunters

Another 2025 study documented, for the first time in the Gulf of California, repeated predation by orcas on juvenile white sharks [2]. Using aerial videos, researchers watched the orcas strike the sharks in a coordinated way to immobilize them and eat their energy-rich liver, which was then shared with the whole pod, calves included [2].

Analyzing the images, they identified known orcas and concluded there is a pod possibly specialized in hunting elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) in the region [2].

Can you see them in La Paz or La Ventana?

Yes, but never as a promise. Orcas travel huge distances and their presence changes day to day. On our trips through the Cerralvo channel, off La Ventana, they show up now and then, and every sighting is a gift. Anyone who guarantees you'll see orcas isn't telling you the truth.

If that excites you, the La Ventana Ocean Safari is the trip with the best chances of meeting big animals: dolphins, mobulas, whales and, sometimes, orcas.
